Winemaker Neill Culley and a group of friends passionate about New Zealand and its wines decided in 1996 to create his own winery. Their goal: to produce world-class wines strains from two of the best growing areas of New Zealand: Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, and Marlborough region known worldwide for its sauvignon blancs.

On Waiheke Island, Cable Bay has ten vineyards planted with Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec strains. The vineyards that the winery owns in Marlborough are located in the famous Valley of Brancott, and are only planted with varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. In owning vineyard plots in different areas allows a range of grapes with different attributes and reduce the risk associated with the production of a single terroir.

Cable Bay philosophy is to respect the unique characteristics of each vineyard that possesses characteristics. The vinification of each vineyard plot is separate, allowing produce wines with personality. These wines are used to create the final product, thus achieving harmonious and balanced wines, with taste and interest.
